Welcome to Lisboa, Portugal!

After traveling all early morning, Drew and I finally made it to Lisbon at 7am. So much work for a mere 1 hour flight. It feels weird being in a country that doesn't speak Spanish (or English), so I guess it's time for me to rack my brains for the minimal Portuguese I used to speak 3 years ago!

Somehow, someway, we made it to the hostel without even getting lost. It was truly a miracle. We get lost EVERYWHERE! Even at our home in Valladolid :) I think we were in an older part of the city. Where we walked through to get to our hostel was like a little fisherman town. But it smells and feels like ocean air everywhere and I LOVE it! One of the many things I miss from my home! But I could definitely wait 11 more days for that :)

This is the VERY old trolley that miraculously took us to our destination..which we basically stumbled upon by luck.

When we got to the front door of the hostel, we rang the bell and it unlocked and a nice little Portuguese woman was waiting on top of the balcony to welcome us. She asked what languages we spoke and used a little of all 3 of them! I'm starting to love hostels! These people are so nice! Instead of rushing to check us in and get us out of their hair, the guy at the front told told us to hold off on all the paperwork and go enjoy the breakfast while it was still out. A lot of the people staying here speak English and sound American. Time to get the scoop on Portugal! We have 4 hours until we're allowed in the room. I feel dirty and probably smell like a wonderful combination of metro and airport floor...I can't wait those 4 hours until I can shower! For now, we'll explore the streets of Lisbon...dirty!

A museum next to the monastery across the street from our hostel

A view of the monastery and fountain from the water front. Here there was a street market/fair going on so we walked around and looked at the different vendors...it was just like every other typical street fair, but with a Portugal touch.

Drew found a black version of the cane him and the other guys had in Valladolid, haha!

This is the train that takes you up and down the coast of Lisboa and to the surrounding cities. We took the train up as far north as it went, to Cascais, which is a beautiful beach town with some tourism, but still a lot of cool things to see!

A view of the beach front the train station

We ate lunch at this pleasant little "sports" bar on the beach called La Salamandra. This was our view during lunch :)

After lunch, we wandered around the town to see what all was there. I personally thought this town was was nicer/cuter than Lisbon, and it was better taken care of.

While we were in Cascais, I kept seeing touches of things that specifically reminded me of Brazil. Like these buildings! Almost everywhere we went in Brazil mainly had these bright colored buildings that were simple but still stood out because of their color! We also found a lot of Brazilian style food, and my favorite, churrasco! Which is like Brazilian barbecue/grill...delicious!

This part of Portugal was big on fishing...you can find all the equipment laying around almost anywhere

A cobblestone bridge leading to a secret beach and a mini lagoon

Lighthouse...next to a huge beautiful castle-like house!

The reefs we found just north of the center of the city. This is house the coast is for the next several miles. It reminded me of Hawaii! Shortly after this picture, I got BLASTED by a blow hole in the reef and got soaking wet! Thankfully I had just put my camera away! Drew was cracking up because he almost got it all on his camera in the splash free zone...

The docks

What the residential area looks like...it was so peaceful and cute wandering back here! It was almost like being back "home" in Spain!

When we got back to the hostel, we were exhausted, but starving. Luckily, there was a market right up the street from us so we gathered up the easiest dinner we could find and had a picnic in the back patio. This is when we REALLY fell in love with this hostel. Everyone was just so awesome and happy to be broke and eating bread wine/beer. I could definitely spend more time with these type of people!

The back patio where we enjoyed our dinner. Which eventually got a little more full as the night went on :)

Graduation and Celebration Dinner with Professor Martín

On Thursday, after finals (aced them!) we met our professor from Cal State at Plaza Mayor for a LONG walk to our celebration dinner near VallSur...the furtherst south I've ever walked in Valladolid. But it was SO worth it. The restaurant was an all you can eat buffet with EVERYTHING! It was delicious and fresh and everyone got painfully full. Then had Argentine churrasco, all sorts of asian, sushi, teppan grill, never ending mariscos (shellfish) and so much more!! My professor was so excited to take us here because he loves to please.

Jenna and I waiting to meet up with our professor in the café in Plaza Mayor

The guys...WAY too excited about this picture with their Chino-bought canes and cigars, haha

The restaurant we walked to

Everyone eating and saying goodbye to our Spanish professors...and getting WAY too full!

The next morning, we had our "graduation" from University of Valladolid. It seemed a little silly, but we do have a diploma from a European Union Unviersity and maybe that will come in handy one day ;) After the ceremony, we had celebration tapas and wine and hung out in the courtyard with our professors.

Later, we went home for a siesta and packing, and then out on our last night in Valladolid with everyone! Most everyone had a bus to catch at 4am to get to the airport in time...it was so weird having almost all of them be gone! I've spent every single day, almost all day with these people. It's crazy how fast they became like family. In the morning, Drew, Tyler, Thomas and I caught the bus together to Madrid and made a stop at my dad's friend's house to drop of my luggage. After a battle with the metro system and some Spanish flavored Domino's, it was time for Tyler and Thomas to head on their way home. And then there were two...

Last Days in Valladolid

I can't believe I have lived in Valladolid for a month now and it is almost time to leave. I feel like this place is my home! Here is what we do with our last few days in Valladolid:

My friend got a tattoo....

 Cringing for 20 mins straight

"Así es la vida".....that's life

After a little bit of souvenir shopping, we also went to the churrería and got WAY to many churros with chocolate

I'm going to miss everything about this place!

12 Days, 4 Countries, Let's GO!!

All my flights for my travels after I graduate are finally BOOKED! And I can't believe how cheap we found the tickets for too! But, here's the plan:

Tomorrow: last day of class and time to study for my finals! :/
Thursday: Finals and then a celebration dinner with my professor
Friday: graduation from Universidad de Valladolid (weird?)
Saturday: a group of us will take the bus to Madrid for the day while we wait for our flights on Sunday (My dad has a friend in Madrid who is letting us keep our luggage there while we travel, yay!)
Sunday: We leave for Lisbon, Portugal at 6:40am and land at 7! I love 20 minute flights...I plan to go straight to the beach and take a good, long nap!

I found this amazing hostel at the perfect location: a couple minutes walk to the beach in a nice area AND it was built in 2011, so it can't be that bad...for only 8€ per night! Sounds like a deal to me!! I'm starting to love hostels.

We will be in Portugal for 3 days and then on
Wednesday: we leave for Bordeaux, France early in the morning, once again. (Unfortunately, it's 3 hour flight, not 20 minute :/) I can't wait to go see some fancy wineries and French castles!

We're in France for about 2.5 days and then finally, on
Friday: We head to ROME, ITALY around 1pm. I am definitely most excited about this one. I already love Italy and haven't even been there yet. I don't know how I'm going to handle only being there for a few days. I hope I can scramble my brains and re-discover the Italian I learned in high school!

After a wonderful weekend in Italy, we have to start heading back home on
Monday: We have an early morning flight back to Madrid because Drew's flight leaves to go back to California that day :( I can't believe it's coming to an end already! I'll spend the day alone for my first time in over a month :o which is okay because Madrid has become like a second home to me by now. Plus, I have "shelter" at my dad's friend's home right off the Metro stop.
Tuesday: I have a late morning flight to Paris to meet up with my flight back home! Thank goodness my dad was able to use his frequent flyer points so I can have a hotel near the Paris airport. I'll have a place to keep my luggage and a giant comfy bed to sleep on for the first time in weeks! Haha, I think I might be looking forward to this luxurious day ;)
Wednesday: My flight back to LAX leaves early morning and I will be back in my American household before dinner!

I can't believe how fast everything has flown by. And I also can't believe how many more adventures I have until I leave!! CAN'T WAIT!!

6 Weeks in Europe

BIG NEWS!!

Thanks to the help and support of my wonderful parents, I get to stay in Europe and travel around for 12 days after I "graduate" from University of Valladolid! I and BEYOND excited! A few of my friends are staying the weekend after, and then one of my friend will be with me to travel around until the 25th (my flight is early morning on the 27th).

In the beginning, I wanted to book my original flight and have some extra days after to travel around, because not only would I have saved money, but it is my dream! I was convinced that it wasn't going to happen, but my parents help me make it work out perfectly! I only have 12 days, so I'm going to have to do a speed travel through Europe: Portugal, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy....somehow we'll make it happen!

Now it is just time to start planning! Gotta hunt for some good flight/train deals to get the most I can out of this. As soon as I figure out what I am doing and where I am going, I'll let you all know!

One last time, a mis padres, you da best!! :)

Field Trip Friday

So, on Friday (and Thursday), none of the other students came to class except for the other girl in my class from my school, Claudia and me. The Iowa and Pennsylvania kids are all in school a week longer than us, so they all went on an extended weekend trip from Wednesday-Monday. I'm not gonna like, intimate time with both my professors and just one other student was pretty fun... (not).

But instead of having a treacherously long and lonely class on Friday as well, they decided to meet us at our houses and we walked to some museums/historical houses!

So after my professor and Claudia met me at my house, we went to Casa de José Zorilla

The gardens outside his house

His kitchen

Everything was so little! We felt like giants walking through the house

The bed where José Zorilla was born

He died while he was writing at his desk (which he brought with him wherever he went strangely enough, I guess he wouldn't write without it), and within the same day of his death, they made a mold of his face in order to preserve his memory

Orignal hand painted wall paper

Next, we went to Casa de Cervantes. Although this IS the location of where his house used to be, it's not completely in it's original condition

This "library" used to be a bar below Cervantes' house

Coolest backyard patio ever

Some things preserved from the area where Cervantes lived

What his kitchen "probably looked like"

"Cervantes lived here"

Claudia and me with my crazy Literature professor...she's hilarious

An old courtyard in the middle of a shopping mall where we got coffee before meeting my other professor for our next "class"/ field trip

Beautiful walkway

With my culture professor, we went to the Valladolid museum. It had OLD things from Valladolid (and when I say old, I mean like 5000 BC old), which was pretty cool. I love going to museums with someone who knows what they're talking about. I love to learn about everything, but it's even better to learn when you have the history sitting live in front of you :)

This is a thing (sorry, actual word was lost in translation) in which they used to store the fingers, toes, ears or other tiny body parts and pieces of body parts of the saints. My professor had us guessing what it was for at least 5 minutes before he told us. Haha, definitely not anti-climactic.

The museum was in an old palace that they turned into a museum fairly recently. All the palaces I have visited have almost the exact same layout, but they're all so different! This one's been made to look newer, but I figured I would still take a picture :)
