We got to Rome early in the afternoon and it was HOT outside!! We knew exactly where our hostel/campsite was, but had trouble finding transportation to get there because the metro and main city buses were on strike that Friday...and every Friday apparently! Luckily, we found out that most of the metro lines open again at 5pm. So we ended up taking a bus to the center and waiting around in the hot and sticky metro station for the strike to be over.
When we got to our campgrounds, it was like a heaven to us! For only 8€ a night, we got access to a tent with bunk beds, showers, pool, a mini market, supermarket, BBQ and a bar! Originally, we were planning on never leaving and just living at the campgrounds for life ;) Everyone was so nice and happy to be there, it made our Roma experience even better!
This was our home for the next 3 days! Tent number 99!
Inside our tent a bunk bed and a single. We were suppose to have a "roommate" but the campgrounds weren't especially crowded so we had it all to ourselves. Which was nice because we could just leave everything laying around all day and not worry about keeping it out of the way of the 3rd person and judging if he was going to steal our things or not ;)
The picture we planned to send to our Spain friends to make them jealous they didn't stay with us ;) I don't remember if we actually got around to doing that or not...haha
Poolside...SO refreshing in the upper 90 degree weather!
That night, we walked across the street to the supermarket and bought burgers, buns, and veggies to cook on the BBQ for dinner. We were bargain hunting and didn't want to splurge on coals so we waited for a another group so finish using the grills and used their embers to slow cook our burgers. Although it took quite a while, it was actually pretty good! One of the better meals we had in a while.
30-45 minutes later, our slow-cooked masterpiece
After a night of relaxing by the BBQ, watching some fĂștbol, and talking to the other travelers staying at the campsite, we got another good night's sleep to prepare for our trip to the colosseum the next day.
Rome was a pretty populated area, so the public transportation took us quite a while. We had to take a bus from the campgrounds to the metro and then take a couple metro lines to the other end of Rome to get to the Colosseum area. When we finally stepped outside, it was SO hot!! I'm surprised we survived that long out in that direct sunlight and heat all day long.
Right outside the station, dozens of people were swarming towards this pipe sticking out of the wall in order to desperately fill their water bottle repeatedly. Haha, it was actually pretty funny to watch people frantically try to reach over and squeeze by one another to get their water before they died a horrible death in the downtown Rome heat :)
But I won't lie, that wall water was heavenly!
Right across the street, there is was..the Colosseum!! I still can't believe I was really there!
We were hoping we were going to get lucky and finally not have to sneak around paying for something, but the Colosseum was definitely worth the 12€ we paid. We even snooped in every now and then on the guided tours around the arena to hear some history with out paying 10€ more ;) Just a handy little college student trick of mine!
Afterwards, we walked around that area of Rome and took the long way back to the metro station so we could see some more ruins around the city
That was a LONG day and I wish we got the opportunity to see and do more, but we were just so beat from the heat and walking miles and miles all over the place, we were ready for some pool and relaxing time to recharge for the next day!
